Historical mystery has always been one of my favorite genres, and this latest installment in the Tate and Bell Mystery Series is another compelling reminder of all the reasons why.
Newlyweds Gemma Tate, a dedicated nurse, and Scotland Yard Inspector Sebastian Bell are finally enjoying a well-earned honeymoon on the peaceful farm belonging to Sebastian’s brother. Their quiet escape is cut short when a childhood friend arrives in a panic after discovering the body of a seven-year-old girl on Devil’s Ridge—a place long rumored to have once been a pagan sacrificial altar. With a child dead under deeply unsettling circumstances, Gemma and Sebastian have no choice but to put their honeymoon on hold and begin investigating. Their search for the truth soon uncovers buried secrets, fractured relationships, and a web of lies that reaches far deeper than either of them initially expects.

Just when I thought I had everything figured out, another twist sent me in a completely different direction. Even after all my guessing and second-guessing, the final reveal still managed to catch me by surprise.
Gemma’s Emotional Challenge
What made this case particularly compelling was its emotional weight. Because the victim is a young child, Gemma finds herself walking a difficult line between compassion and professionalism.
