Everyone who has ever met me knows that I am one of the biggest fans and constant readers of Stephen King. In my opinion, Stephen King is a true master of world and character building, as well as truly gripping storytelling. Although many readers know him by some of his famous monsters, he doesn’t always need monsters to make his readers feel real terror. He uses broad daylight reality and the people next door to throw it right at us. Bag of Bones, which was released back in 1998, is just that kind of novel by King.
What Is Bag of Bones About?
After his wife’s sudden death, bestselling novelist Mike Noonan spirals every time he tries to write. He decides to move to his wife’s favorite place: their cabin by the lakeside in Maine called Sara Laughs. While hoping for the peace and quiet that will help him write, he begins experiencing vivid nightmares, strange visions, and disturbing supernatural events that make him realize that he is not alone in the house. Meanwhile, Mike befriends a young widow and her 3-year-old daughter as a result of the little girl’s jaywalking. He soon learns that the town is hiding a long and cruel history connected to the lake. As Mike uncovers the truth, he realizes that the ghost that is haunting him is linked to injustice, racism, and unfathomable violence from the past. And that past is not done claiming victims…

I can safely say that this is one of King’s most intimate and emotionally driven books.

My Thoughts
As a lifelong Constant Reader, I am more than familiar with King’s author characters and the concept of grief or guilt becoming haunting factors. While it may initially make you worry whether it’s going to be another novelist having a crisis story, I’m more than happy to put your worries to rest! King brings in new elements to the story, like a curse and ancient beliefs against evil spirits, and blends them in masterfully. The entire story is beautifully developed, and the characters’ pasts and secrets are intricately woven together, which keeps the pages turning nonstop.
Although some readers seem to have minded the age gap between Mattie, the young widow, and Mike, it didn’t seem disturbing to me. Mike himself is not an “old guy,” and I found it very natural for him to be attracted to a young lady, while protecting both her and her daughter like his own family. For me, the story was tense, full of raw emotion, and a constant feeling of uneasiness that kept tugging at the readers’ nerves. And let me tell you, that is something I often look for in my supernatural horror reads. I can confidently say that this book easily found its place in my top 10 Stephen King novels!
